How to Master Your Internal Dialogue


How do you speak to yourself when no one’s around? Do you act like your very own cheerleader, or are you your own worst critic? Do you praise yourself for how amazing your truly are, or do you pick at every little fault you think you have or every mistake you may have made? Your internal dialogue is one of the most important aspects in your life. I truly believe that your external environment is only a reflection of your internal environment. If your thoughts are negative, chaotic, and confusing, then don’t be surprised if you are living among those very same things. I can admit that I used to talk bad about myself before someone else even had a chance to, but that’s because I was trained to do so. My mom was very negative and was always hard on herself, so I picked up on her bad habits. I never thought I was good enough. I used to call myself “fat,” stupid,” “ugly,” etc. because that’s how I truly felt about myself. Looking back on it, it hurts, but I will be forever grateful that I learned how to turn my negative thoughts about myself and the world into positive ones. Now, I tell myself, “You are a boss-ass bitch!” on the daily because there is nothing that I can’t do, and I know this. I am beautiful, amazing, loved, capable, blessed, focused, determined, worthy, dope (I could go on and on!), and you are too! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise…especially not yourself.


To change your internal dialogue from negative to positive, there are a few things you can do:

  1. Every time you have a negative thought, immediately take it back and switch it with something more positive. Soon, you will be on autopilot, and the negative thoughts will become fewer and fewer.

  2. Write a list about all the things you love about yourself. Work every day to add a new thing to the list. Every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to bed, read that list out loud, and you will quickly internalize those positive traits and start to see yourself in a new light.

  3. Use the power of affirmations. “’I AM” are two of the most powerful words that exist. Whatever you put after them will immediately shape your reality. Write an “I AM” statement and repeat it to yourself as much as you need to until you start to believe that you are incredible...because you are!
