Vision Board — How to Manifest Your Life's Desires

The Law of Attraction is a powerful, universal law that provides the opportunity to shape our lives and attract our deepest and greatest desires.

It states that: Our attitudes and beliefs create a magnet to attract events, circumstances, and opportunities to live out those attitudes and beliefs. And, one of the most powerful tools for utilizing the Law of Attraction is making a vision board.

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is a powerful Law of Attraction tool that helps you narrow down your desires through the power of choice. This tool helps you invest the time and energy to visualize your future and consistently reminds you of your life’s goals.

If you’re reading this post, chances are you have already done some reflecting on what you want to be, do, or have in your life. Perhaps, you’ve heard of vision boards and are curious to learn more about how they work, or maybe, the Law of Attraction is new for you. Creating a vision board is a fun, tangible, and powerful way to say, “Yes, please!” to the abundance you’d like to receive (and deserve!) in your life.

How Does It Work?

You know how when you get a new car, you see that particular make and model everywhere you go? That’s because you have put your attention on something specific and are unconsciously scanning the world for items that match it. It’s not that those cars were never there; it’s simply that you never noticed them before.

So, it makes sense then, that if you put your attention on the images in your vision board that the energy of that thing will more likely be in your awareness.

When you continue to give your attention to the things you want, you attract those things into your life. But, be careful, Queen! The Universe does not discriminate between positive and negative! If you look for reasons to support why you are having a terrible day (“I stubbed my toe, then spilled my coffee, then got stuck in traffic”), you’ll keep attracting things to prove you right! It’s simple: The more you surround yourself with the things you want to experience, the more you’ll actually get to experience those things in your life. Remember, energy goes where attention flows.

Follow the steps below to create your own Vision Board:

  1. Step 1: Connect to your vision. Meditate, daydream, or journal about all the things you want to be, do, or have, and don’t forget to consider the multiple dimensions of your life as well. Imagine your ideal career, relationship, house, car, community, body, and so on. The more specific you can be, the better!

  2. Step 2: Gather your materials. Sometimes, it’s fun to flip through magazines and cut out images and words that call to you. If you go this route, take into consideration what kinds of magazines you have laying around. Remember that it’s crucial for everything you select to appear on your vision board to be representative of what you do want, not anything you don’t. For this reason, it can be even more helpful and specific to use Google to pull up the exact image or word you want to see. Once you’ve gathered your images, you’ll also need a bulletin board, poster board, or several pieces of paper, scissors, and glue or tape. If you don’t consider yourself particularly crafty though and would rather create a digital vision board Pinterest can be a great way to collect and display images that light you up too.

  3. Step 3: Display it. Once you’ve made your vision board, it’s important to hang it in view—maybe on the inside of your closet door or on your refrigerator. Don’t feel like you need to stare at it 24/7, but it does need to appear in a place where you will encounter it every day. If you make it and put it under your bed, you’re likely to forget about it, but if you keep it in your consciousness mind, you’re sure to see results much more quickly. Some people like to make smaller vision boards that they can take with them. You can put it on or in your journal or daily planner. If you are a student, you can slide it into the plastic cover of your three-ring binder. Or, if it’s digital, you can make it the desktop picture on your computer or the wallpaper photo on your smartphone.

  4. Step 4: Let the universe do its thing, Queen. Once you’ve clarified your vision and made your vision board, your job is simply to just look at it often and trust that the Universe will provide you with the opportunities to manifest each and everything you truly desire. Hold these images in your awareness on a regular basis and say, “Yes!” when opportunities present themselves to make your dreams become a reality. As you come up with new ideas and inspirations, feel free to add to it at any time. Your vision board should be a flexible and fluid representation of your desires as they shift and morph throughout your life. In fact, it’s recommended that you create a completely new vision board every 6- to 12-months to be sure that it’s current, inspiring, and up-to-date with your values and priorities.

Creating a vision board is a special ritual. It’s a time to get in touch with your true-self, identify your true desires, and focus your energy on attracting them into your life. Treat this moment as something special, as something kind you’re doing for yourself.

There are 3 main purposes for your vision board. What are they?

  1. The power of choice. Visions boards force you to examine your desires and focus on those that truly matter to you. Whether creating one or several boards, the limited space forces you and empowers you to focus in on your most treasured desires. The process of choosing what to put on your vision board is simple yet meaningful. First, identify your wishes or desires, then select images that represent those desires. This simple selection process narrows down your focus and personalizes your board with specific messages that matter to you. There is power in focusing on the details of how to represent your desire. The process of making those choices sends a very specific and personalized message to the universe about your desires.

  2. The power of visualization. Without a doubt, it is the visual aspect of a dream board that really drives home your desires and sends a very loud, clear message. It’s easy to think that choosing and focusing on a desire helps achieve it, but visualization isn’t as straightforward as we think it is. To understand why visualizing your desires is so powerful, we need to look at the brain. Our brain is an incredible machine that is geared toward making us successful with every action we take. Our brain trains our bodies to prepare for action—when we imagine ourselves preparing for an activity, our brains actually run through the process as if it’s in real-time and send signals to the rest of our body to complete the action. Visualization is nearly as powerful as performing the action itself. When you visualize yourself living in your dream home, for example, your brain trains your body for that exact reality.

  3. The power of consistency. It’s no secret that consistency is important. Whether attempting to learn a new skill or create a new habit, consistency is the key. We are wired for repetition, and every time we repeat an action, we become stronger in that action. By creating a vision board and placing it in a spot you see every day, you create the opportunity for consistent visualization to train your mind, body, and spirit to manifest your desires. The wonderful thing about a dream board is that it only requires time and energy for the initial creation. After that, the consistency in the visualization happens every time you look at it.

Vision Boards Help Provide Clarity

For example, to say, “I want a better life” is a fine goal, but have you given serious thought to exactly what that means? Try to envision what your “better life” looks like. For those of us who find that somewhat difficult, making a vision board can be a tremendous help.

In order to create a vision board, you have to actively seek images that represent specific details of this wonderful new life. That means narrowing it down to specifics.

For some, a better life might mean having a new car or home. Others may be seeking a new relationship or improvements in existing relationships.

It’s always said that most of us never get what we want because we don’t know what we want. Making a vision board is a wonderful way to bring clarity to that general desire and turn it into an achievable goal.

Use a Vision Board for Your Daily Affirmations

Once you dream it, the next step is to believe it. In addition to images, vision boards can include words, phrases, or sentences that affirm your intentions.

Somehow, we must silence the mind-chatter that plagues us all every minute of every waking hour. You know that little voice in your head that never shuts up, the one that supports and promotes all your limiting beliefs by repeating an endless litany of every shortcoming you could possibly have (and some you couldn’t possibly have), and every reason why you can’t or shouldn’t or won’t ever be, do, or have what you really want. Affirmations express who you really are, release you from those limiting beliefs, and allow you to know that the possibilities really are unlimited.

A Vision Board Keeps You Focused

Finally, another key purpose that vision boards serve is to help you stay focused. It isn’t difficult to start each day with a positive attitude until you get out of bed.

How quickly that fresh “new me” attitude can sink back into oblivion beneath the tasks and challenges of everyday life. How can you possibly remain focused on any goal while people and circumstances constantly pull you in a million different directions all at once?

No matter what happens during your day, your vision board is a constant reminder of where you intend to be. Appealing to you on both conscious and subconscious levels, a vision board can work wonders toward keeping your mind focused on your goal, your attention on your intentions, and your life headed in the direction you choose.

“Your brain will work tirelessly to achieve the statements you give your subconscious mind. And, when those statements are the affirmations and images of your goals, you are destined to achieve them!”—Jack Canfield

By representing your goals with pictures and images you will actually strengthen and stimulate your emotions because your mind responds strongly to visual stimulation, and your emotions are the vibrational energy that activates the Law of Attraction.

Thoughts + Emotions + Action = Manifestation

How Do You Use a Vision Board for Goal-Setting?

The best way to achieve your goals is to keep them top of mind, so you’re always looking for ways to move yourself closer to them, and a vision board is the perfect tool to help you do just that.

By putting a vision board somewhere you can see it every day, you will prompt yourself to visualize your ideal life on a regular basis. And, that’s important because visualization activates the creative powers of your subconscious mind and programs your brain to notice available resources that were always there but escaped your notice. Through the Law of Attraction, visualization also magnetizes and attracts to you the people, resources, and opportunities you need to achieve your goal.

By adding a visualization practice to your daily routine, you will naturally become more motivated to reach your goals. You’ll start to notice that you are unexpectedly doing things that move you closer to your ideal life.

Your vision of your ideal life shouldn’t be focused on “stuff” so much as on how you want to feel. For this reason, add words to your vision board that describe how you want to feel on a daily basis, such as: joyful, abundant, powerful, fearless, loved, strong, healthy, loving, and financially-free.

After Creating Your Vision Board

Once you’ve created your vision board, place it in an area that you see every day. To avoid “not really seeing” your vision board, make a positive habit out of sitting with your board at least once a week. Simply take 10-minutes to look at your board, reflect on why you specifically chose those images, and revisit the feelings of happiness and gratitude of eventually having those desires in your life.

Not only is a vision board a wonderful reminder of what you truly want in life, it’s a powerful motivator to enact on achieving your goals.

Treat your vision board like it’s sacred—it’s a special gift you’ve given to yourself and a powerful tool to attract all your desires into your life.

As some time goes by, and your dreams begin to manifest, look at those images and affirmations that represent your achievements, and feel gratitude for how well the Law of Attraction is working in your life. Acknowledge that it is working. Don’t remove the pictures or images that represent the goals you’ve already achieved. Achievement of the goals in your vision board are powerful visual reminders of what you have already consciously and deliberately attracted into your life.

Write down the date you created your vision board. The universe loves speed, and you will be amazed at just how quickly the Law of Attraction responds to your energy, commitment, and desires. Much like a time capsule, this board will document your personal journey, your dreams, and your achievements for that particular year. It will become a record of your growth, awareness, and expansion that you will want to keep and reflect back upon in years to come.

  • Look at your dream board often and feel the inspiration it provides.

  • Hold it in your hands and really internalize the future it represents.

  • Read your daily affirmations and inspirational words aloud.

  • See yourself living in that manner.

  • Feel yourself in the future you have designed.

  • Believe it is already yours.

  • Be grateful for the good that is already present in your life.

  • Acknowledge any goals you have already achieved.

  • Acknowledge the changes you have seen and felt.

  • Acknowledge the presence of God in your life.

  • Acknowledge the Law of Attraction at work in your life.

  • Look at it just before going to bed and first thing upon rising.

“Vision is merely a dream without action.”—Joel Barker

You don’t have to wait for external things to change in order to create success. You can choose them, and therefore be success with them now, so let’s get to work, Queen!

In that same breath, be sure to ground your list in the things that you are actually in control of, which is your:

  • thoughts

  • feelings

  • emotions

  • choices

  • actions

You cannot control anything outside of yourself, including other people. So, if you come up with things other than your own internal state or actions, look at the above list of things you can actually control and make a new list.

Start putting your aligned actions into practice right away.

What aligned actions can you start taking right now, to make your intentions your reality?

As you begin taking action and making your vision real, you will start to notice blocks in the form of stories, limiting beliefs, unhealed emotional wounds, habits, and unconscious patterns that are in the way. Nothing has gone wrong when this happens. It’s how alchemy (aka transformation) works.

Healing that resistance, coupled with your aligned actions, is how you create a life that is filled with your heartfelt dreams and desires. There is no way around that, Queen.
